This newly constructed guest farm is situated
70 km north of Cape Town in a safe and peaceful area adjacent
to long unspoilt beaches, many renowned for windsurfing and
other aquatic activities, on South Africa's Atlantic Coast.
The drive from Cape Town takes under an hour on a road which,
like most major roads in South Africa, is in excellent condition
and safe, despite what you may have heard to the contrary.
The area is ideal for a peaceful outdoor family holiday, and
close to many quaint and interesting coastal and inland villages
such as Darling, Langebaan, Riebeek Casteel, Paternoster, St.
Helena Bay.
Day drives to the beautiful Western Cape Winelands and historic
towns such as Stellenbosch and Paarl are practical and enjoyable
thanks to the good network of roads, which carry very little
traffic by European standards.
Cape Town itself, with a variety of cultural and dining experiences,
Robben Island, Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch Gardens, and the
world renowned Waterfront with a vast choice of activities for
everyone, is less than an hour's drive. Even closer is the Table
View beachfront area from where the classic view of the flat
topped Table Mountain, Cape Town's icon, is seen at its best,
and where there are many restaurants ranging from classic international
and South African cuisine to fast food takeaways.
Cape Town is under 12 hours from Europe with nonstop flights
and reasonable fares from many European cities, and only one
hour time difference in the European winter, none in the summer,
so no jet lag. The West Coast has an excellent climate for most
of the year, although spring and autumn are perhaps the best
times to visit this area, and in spring there is the bonus of
the impressive Namaqualand flowers. (Not forgetting of course
that South Africa's seasons are the opposite of Europe's!)
The current relative weakness of the South African Rand makes
travel to South Africa affordable and now is likely to be a
good time to go before the 2010 World Cup starts to drive prices
up.

Africa in general from neilgrad@iafrica.com
